Steve Barnhill is a writer and creative director with 27 years of experience in institutional, corporate and marketing communications. He is particularly well known for the consistent quality of his work across different media. At Edge, Steve oversees the company’s creative staff and shares executive responsibilities.

Steve has won most awards available to advertising writers, for work ranging from radio commercials to annual reports to outdoor boards. His professional experience includes six years with Rice University after graduate school, three years with Bozell, 20 years with Barnhill & Co., Inc. and six with Taylor Brown & Barnhill. During his time as vice chairman and executive creative director at TB&B, the agency was named “Rookie of the Year” (ADWEEK), “Houston’s Hottest Shop,” (Houston Business Journal) and “the upstart in the Southwest” (Advertising Age).

Steve contributed a case study to Business & Managerial Communication: New Perspectives (Harcourt Brace), edited by Dr. Linda Driskill of the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University. He has also served as editor of Historic Galveston, written two articles for Adweek magazine and a corporate history of Luby’s Cafeterias, Inc. In the mid-1980s, he was a leader in the creation and production of Houston Proud, a landmark multi-media promotional campaign for his hometown. Most important of all, of course: Steve is a proud former Coast Guardsman.

Outside of work, Steve has served as a director of Operation Rainbow, the Volunteer Auxiliary of the Harris County Hospital District, The Park People, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian School, IABC/Houston and Houston Metropolitan Ministries. The latter organization presented him its Nactigal-Talley Award. The Texas Neurofibromatosis Foundation has honored him with its Maury Darst Award. Most recently, Houston’s ChildBuilders organization presented Steve its Award of Merit for his work on its behalf.

The father of two grown children – one in Austin and another in Boston – and grandfather to one precious baby girl, Steve lives with his two mischievous coon hounds and Calico cat in a 70-year-old home in Garden Oaks.
